Ok, maybe the installer, when running in the virtual machine,
decided not to install swap space.  When moving the installed
hdd to another system, having swap space could now be important,
because the system has not that much physical memory.

Another possible explanation is a bug in some application,
so that it uses *huge* amounts of memory.  I think I remember
some recent reports that GNOME's gconfd may consume 2GB and
more of memory after upgrading certain systems to current
opensolaris releases.  Something like that...
