You may be better off with Ubuntu on the desktop. I'm not sure what your
criteria for the perfect OS are but outside of Windows and OS X, Ubuntu is good
distribution for desktops. Apt-get or aptitude--and the fact it works very
well--is a very powerful tool on Ubuntu. Software becomes a commodity, because
of the depth and breadth of their repositories, you install when you need it.
I agree with this, that Ubuntu or KUbuntu is the best desktop system out
there!!!
My personal take on OSX or MS Win is don't use if you can avoid it do
so......
Ubuntu has more apps then you'll ever need and it's ease of install
usage and drivers is really brilliant, even for a cli based clump like
me who can't do anything in the gui to save his life.
The only thing in my point of view that OSol suffers from is lack of
apps and difficulty to compile certain pieces of software on it like
centerim won't work for me which is a cli based IM client.
I have managed to get OSol working for me and have been using nothing
else for a while now but it has needed a lot of hacking and now with my
upgrade to snv_132 devel needs even more hacking!!
The one thing I will say about OSol is the friendliness and willingness
to help by the developers as they're really approachable if you get
approached by one. Also OSol does use the Solaris kernel and has the
addition of zones too which I'm using 2 of on my laptop and when needed
Linux I have Vbox and 6GB of RAM to boot.
If really in doubt or new to UNIX then I would go Linux and Ubuntu or
madly keen on GUI then OpenSUSE which has YaST but after trying it once
5 years ago and hating it as too graphic-y for me I turned to Debian
which is what Ubuntu is based on. Ubuntu is better as has later versions
of apps and is more stable on newer hardware.
FreeBSD is also cool but unless you want to spend time compiling from
the ports collection I would go Linux again......
Try and see although if used to MS and OSX then UNIX will be a steep and
difficult learning curve for you but with perseverance you will get
there! :-)
