You can always create an ABE before you try something unknown.

I append "-ABE" to the BE I want to protect

beadm list

BE Active Mountpoint Space Policy Created

-- ------ ---------- ----- ------ -------

opensolaris-sru7 - - 20.30M static 2009-12-09 11:56

opensolaris-sru8 NR / 14.65G static 2010-01-29 13:42

opensolaris-sru8-ABE - - 84.0K static 2010-02-03 08:39

To create if you are active in the BE you want to protect:

beadm create opensolaris-sru8-ABE

It takes about 10 seconds to create an ABE

Then if you update fails then just activate and boot to the ABE

beadm activate
init 6

You can then either delete the spoiled BE and recreate it or mount it an tray to fix it and both are done with the beadm command.

I do this all the time to reduce patching risks or when trying some package I have no experience with on Solaris and OpenSolaris. You just have to remember to destroy/create the ABE to keep it current just before you start the risky work.

now i can't get the new pkg and i can't use the old one... great..!
isn't there any streaming server other than VLC?

Have a look at icecast and darkice....

Also a little hint: next time you want to try something in OpenSolaris which you're not sure about if will work or not. Configure a Zone or VM instance using Vbox. That will at least save you the hassle of having a non-functional package which you can't remove or do anything with that clogs up the system.

I find that Solaris has yet to evolve with multimedia so I ended up setting a streaming radio station up with FreeBSD. You could keep the Solaris install as your host and use a FreeBSD or Linux guest in order to stream. If you wanted files directly from your hard drive then install VBox guest additions which will mean that you have access.

Good luck!
