I understand everything in your above post, and I'm quite familiar with editing the grub menu file, and I know how to select text mode in Linux. But what's the kernel parameter to pass to OpenSolaris to tell it not to start the graphical login?
Commenting out the splash stuff and the 'console=graphical' part just tells it to show text boot messages instead of the nice graphical progress bar as it boots.
