Check the Accessibility preferences in the GNOME keyboard control panel,
to ensure you didn't accidentally enable SlowKeys mode, which requires
you to hold down a key for a few seconds before it's accepted, and beeps
when you don't (used for people with hand tremors or poor motor control
such that they bump extra keys a lot).
