Another user in 'Discussions' knew the solution.. I needed to remove the Splash, the colors and the 'console=graphical' line from the menu.lst file. I did that literally from the Grub loader on the MBR and was immediately able to boot my b134 OpenSol system.
For the record, I have a 1GB Radeon 4670 graphics card on this laptop. It doesn't have any hardware support in the native X environment so I question if its' low level of support didn't relate to the boot problem. Thanks Jeff!
