So what is the elegant solution to update the system if there is a kernel bug 
in the current release snv_111b? Should I switch from the release to the 
development version?

Normally they should be available patches to patch only the kernel to gurantee 
that a release is stable. I guess this is the case with Solaris 10. 
Unfortunately my hosting provider don't support Solaris, they support only 
OpenSolaris.
