A long time ago I had a similar problem on an ASUS M2N-SLI mainboard when trying to boot Solaris GRUB from an USB DVD drive. http://bugs.opensolaris.org/view_bug.do?bug_id=6513165 Some of the BIOS calls used by GRUB crashed BIOS' access to the USB DVD drive.
