I've just installed OpenSolaris to try it out for a bit, and I'm a bit puzzeled
about the range of the numerical UIDs for newly created users.
The user I created during installation was as I expected, with an UID of around (don't
remember) 100 or 1000, and belonged to the group 'staff'. However the users I created
manually afterwards, ended-up belonging to the 'others' group, an with UIDs in the
65000-range ("negative" UIDs?) -- which to me suggests unpriveliged or guests
accounts (e.g. 'nobody').
Is this right and normal? Should really "normal" (non-admin) users belong to the
'others' group (is 'staff' for computer admin staff, or for "company staff"), and should
they *really* have UIDs from the Twilightzone? If not, what is the correct procedure for adding
users? Must I check certain roles/profiles, or must I manually place them in a group and pick a
UID?
