Sorry I never finished following up on this. The latest versions of python available to 2009.06 (both 2.5 and 2.6) did not resolve the problem either. I give up and I'm just suggesting people I'm working with reinstall to b134 on one disk of their mirror, import/copy the relevant stuff off the second disk from the former mirror, then re-mirror. All for the short term until we see what's up with Solaris 11 Express.
Thanks anyway for the help. I tried yet another 2009.06 system with the same results. Only once did an upgrade succeed after many many tries on one system.
