Thanks for the info, I tried configuring /etc/auto_master as you suggested, 
commented out /etc/auto_home, modified /etc/auto_direct as you suggested. 
Unfortunately I still had problems, so I reverted back to the default and 
disabled my own /etc/auto_direct. When I have more time, I will sort it out
