Does startx give any error messages?   Are there any errors in
/var/log/Xorg.0.log?   Which version are you trying to run?   2009.06 is pretty
old, and won't support all the latest graphics cards, though if I remember
correctly, it is new enough to have the boot menu option to force VESA mode
instead - have you tried that?

Use the text install CD instead - the LiveCD only includes the GUI installer.
