The problem is the list sends the email to you from the sender not from the list so gmail replies to the person because reply replies to the sender. My other lists don't have this issue so I'm pretty sure its a setting set differently in mailman that linden might should change to make replying act like you think it would. I see a lot of replies to emails that never hit the list but the sender never knew because they just hit reply. Countless times have I seen people say "I think this was relavant to the whole list" and forwarding it to the list so people can see. I guarantee you the person who sent them the email thought it was going to the whole list.
