Speaking as an unrepresentative sample of... err... one, I find the popup very useful - but *only* in certain defined periods where I am intending that it be an important part of what I'm doing (and it sometimes is). At that point, I *would* like more detail (exactly what version am I arriving in and what version have I arrived from). The rest of the time - being 99.5% of the time, I'd prefer it to default to off, and not see the popup at all.
