Thanks for that Jonathan. Having seen that I am worried that it may be a little
too indistinct, especially as this would be a useful feature when sailing, when
the blue of the sea is the background. But I also realise you don't want it to
become a dominant feature of the mini-map.

I just attached a screenshot to the jira with cyan objects included in
the minimap display.
This color choice plus my word choice of "Range Ring" in the menu is
why I have the jira tagged with "needs design".
