LOL - maps of any kind, even in RL, are confusing! It's the nature of maps. However, for the power user they are designed to be a wealth of information. The circles, and some more of the items I reported a while ago and can no longer find on JIRA that were about making the nearby list more radar-esque, would help clarify many things if done well as well as provide a large dose of information.
