I was so used to transferring keys verbatim from the .pub files to authorized keys, that I just missed the requirement to have the host names at the front in the ssh_known_hosts file. ssh-keyscan does that for you. If I had used it from the beginning, it would have worked. I learned the hard way. I would close this if I could see a way. Of course close it on you end if that is appropriate.
