Jim,
  I am running RedHat 6.1 on a Sony Vaio, with an i686, and was able 
to get openssl to compile and test correctly using the following:

./Configure gcc
make
make test

I tried a few other options, including linux-elf, with the Configure 
script; but, the gcc option alone was the only one that worked.
