Interesting.  May I ask you to try it again with the following
configuration?

        ./config -pthread -D_REENTRANT -D_THREAD_SAFE

>From looking the FreeBSD 3.0-RELEASE man page 'pthread(3)' and in the
include files, that is what is needed for me, and I'd ilke to know if
that is a somewhat safe bet on 2.2.8 as well.
