Yes. There are rumours of an initiative within the Kannel (Open Source
WAP gateway) project. No src yet though.

They are close enough to be able to do per topic compare and contrast.
I have not seen an rigorous analysis although a paper entitled
"w*effect considered harmful" has a short but insightful commentary.
