MIPS R4x000 (the only one Linux runs on for the moment) are capable to
operate in either mode which is selected during early chip
initialization and determined by external circuitry (it reads 256-bits
initialization sequence at a pin). In either case according to
Linux/MIPS site http://lena.fnet.fr/ it's little-endian, so it's not a
bug.
