The test program for ENGINE stuff would be enginetest.c.  Currently,
it really only tests the internal functionality of the ENGINE
mechanism itself, not the external access of the actual hardware, but
I see no reason why that would be completely impossible to do.  Your
way of testing does make sense as well, so there will be a choice to
make...  In a way, perhaps you've done that choice for us :-).
