Your comments look good. However:

mooney> 5) I've noted (but have not fixed) a problem with the shared
mooney> library targets, if one is building with rsaref. As a side
mooney> note, the docs (esp INSTALL) should say *why* someone would
mooney> choose to do so, or why not. Is it generally a win to build
mooney> with RSADSI's RSA reference library, or not? A bit more
mooney> verbiage on the advantages or disadvantages of this option
mooney> might be helpful for the newcomer to openssl.

The only thing to say, really, is "forget rsaref... completely".
RSAref has not been generally available for quite a while (except
from a number of "rebel" sites :-)), and is reputed to be slow as
a dog (or slower). After all, it is a *reference* implementation,
and they are very seldom optimized in any way.

mooney> Since all code on the alpha/Tru64 is position independent code
mooney> (PIC), I'm not sure why the `-no_archive' is even being
mooney> specified. Why not let the compiler choose whatever libraries
mooney> are available?

Perhaps because the exact effects of -no_archive were ill undertood?
