The response leads me to another question:
Is it planned for any forthcoming releases? 

I understand that this is restricted by the device library but if one was to
use lets say, a pkcs#11 interface to the device via the engine API, then
this could be something that can be looked at.

No it is not supported and the relevant functionality is not exposed in
the hardware driver used. 

You need to use the various tools provided with the hardware to generate
a key.
