As I said, libdes exists in several variants, more or less one variant
for MIT KRB and one variant for KTH-KRB4/Heimdal. Both have, as far
as I know, functionality that we don't and some incompatibilities.
Besides, it's just recently that people have actually tried to make
programs that use both Heimdal (for the Kerberos parts) and OpenSSL
(for SSL/TLS), so the hacking to make it work with the internal libdes
as well as with OpenSSL has just started.

And no, they don't currently use OpenSSL instead of libdes by
default. At least for Heimdal, it's only an option. I have no idea
if MIT KRB has even gotten that far yet.
