It sounds like your cc has a nasty bug; why not use gcc? I regularly use gcc -O3 -march=pentiumpro -fschedule-insns2; there is currently a bug when you mix -fschedule-insns (not 2) with -O2 or above. This is at least 10% faster than the default -mcpu=pentium that OpenSSL uses on my box.
