This you can find explained in some Linux FAQs. core dumps are by default
disabled in most (all?) Linux distributions.
It won't help you much anyway, as the core dump would help you in analyzing
"ld", which you are most probably not interested in.
Beyond the gcc/binutils people, that may be interested to check out the
failure to improve their compiler/utilities suite, I can only recommend
you to use a stable compiler if all you want is to use OpenSSL.
