The reason was two-fold:

1) darwin-ppc-cc, as well as a few other targets, had the 
shared_extensions field misaligned, which in effet disabled having 
any extension at all for shared libraries.
2) support for shared libraries with version numbers weren't 
properly done in Configure.

I recalled having asked this question before and gotten the answer 
that this is the way to do things (or something like that).

Anyhow, I've just commited the changes that correct the shared 
library support on Darwin.  It will appear in the snapshots for 
0.9.7 and 0.9.6e later tonight.
