Note that Apple delivers OpenSSL 0.9.6b, so it may be that the 
differences are few enough not to trigger much problems, apparently 
with RC4 being the great exception.  Actually, even this shouldn't 
be a problem, if it weren't for some binary incompatibilities 
between (I think) 0.9.6c and 0.9.6d...

I just tested OpenSSL 0.9.8-dev on MacOSX 5.5 with the delivered 
libcrypto.dylib and libssl.dylib removed, and it had no trouble at 
all.  I'm about to test 0.9.6e-dev (which doesn't differ from 0.9.6d 
at all when it comes to RC4).

I assume we're still talking about 0.9.6d, right?
