It is certainly possible to do without the option. I can use a symbolic
link or fiddle around with environment variables. The point is that I have
to do it manually, after installation. And I thought that this is what the
configure scripts etc. are for: to produce a completely configured and
properly set up installation. Put all the knowledge into the configure
parameters and that's it.

It may be a little complicated the way the parameters are named now but I
think that seperating architecture-dependent files from
architecture-independent files and from version-independent files should
be a minimal requirement.
