Sorry about all of that. My main goal is to provide a packaged OpenSSL that
honours the de facto standard "--prefix," "--exec-prefix," "--sysconfdir,"
etc. install adjustments common among autoconf'd packages.  Additionally,
while I haven't run into any problems myself, it is possible some sites
might need to adjust the CC, which versions of dependency libraries are
linked against, etc., which is also standardized by autoconf.

I have put up an .autoconf3 at site.rpi-acm.org/info/openssl/ with the
standard autoconf INSTALL file (which references "make check"), and an
amended README.

My purpose in contacting this list is to find developers interested in
redoing the functionality of ./Configure in autoconf, and additionally to
find people who are able to test the package on platforms I don't have
access to (just the four unices listed on the page).
