OK, this is very odd.  Can you check against the two attached
archives?  In those files, it looks like the result of your proposed
patch.

The two archives are from the main trunk (openssl-0.9.8-dev.tar) and
the 0.9.7 branch (openssl-0.9.7a-dev.tar).
