Hi,

I am working on a Windows Installer for NTP which includes libeay32.dll and ssleay32.dll and already have released a number of versions (see http://www.meinberg.de/english/sw/ntp.htm).

A number of users have problems with the location of the random seed file (.rnd) which is per default "C:\" on Windows systems. My installer installs NTP as a system service and for security reasons creates a special account with limited rights to run the service.

This account is not allowed to write to "C:\". I am aware of the possibility to use an environment variable HOME or RANDFILE, but there are a few drawbacks:

- defining a environment variable for a specific user is kind of tricky under windows and using a systemwide variable seems incorrect/insecure to me

My suggestion would be to change the default location on Windows Systems from C:\.rnd to %USERPROFILE%, which is already existing on all Windows NT/2K/XP/and so on systems.

Is this an option for you? If yes, I could provide a small patch. If not, please let me know why.

Thank you for your great piece of software!

Kind regards,
Heiko
