Answering my own message ;). It was a "bug" - bn_gf2m.c was designed to allow operations on Elliptic Curves and did not allow operations I needed. I've contacted Douglas Stebila, who fixed it and sent me a patch. I believe he will submit it to OpenSSL soon. ps.
