There is a comment in RT saying "this was brought [up] several times,
it's compiler bug." It was recognized by Sun and they have released
compiler patches for both x86 and sparc compilers.

Well, it happens once in a while that compiler bugs are worked around in
source code. It can happen if problem code gets identified in short
time, like within 1/2 hour, and modification improves readability. But
customary answer is indeed "fix compiler or drop optimization level." A.
