This is just a "normal" vhost in apache. Apparently, it's sufficient
to just point a browser to an http URL of a large object (I'm using a static
1MB html file) and then press and hold Ctlr+R to trigger this. After some
additional experiments I've found that mod_php just needs to be loaded to
trigger this, using it is not required. Without mod_php, no segfaults or
aborts occur. I have to admit that I have no idea why any of the curl 
cleanup functions are called from php on shutdown as php (and by extension
the curl+openssl modules) is not used at all on my test setup.
