That was it -- I had installed SSLeay before (not knowing OpenSSL existed
since last time I had looked at needing SSL was almost a year ago :)))
deleted /usr/local/ssl and reinstalled OpenSSL -- did a make clean and make
on Crypt-SSLeay and everything worked perfectly :)))))
