As I understand it, the email address is stored in an X509 certificate as

CN=A N Other/Email=<email address>

My question is, what is permissible as <email address>? Must it purely
be user@mx , or are comments and angle bracket formations permissible --
e.g. Jack Straw <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (Home Secretary) -- as one might find
in an SMTP header?

I'm in the process of writing an S/MIME processor which compares the
From: address in the headers to the email address found in the certificate,
so I need to know how much munging of the two strings might conceivably
be required before I make the comparisom.

Thanks,

John
