Seriously, you might try playing around with the openssl s_client command
(http://www.openssl.org/docs/apps/s_client.html#) to get an idea of how easy
or hard it would be. For example, try

openssl s_client -connect www.verisign.com:443

and after it stops spewing, type GET / and press return.
