Ahh I get it I just add uid to the policy section (policy_anything in my case) to give: [ policy_anything ] countryName = optional stateOrProvinceName = optional localityName = optional organizationName = optional organizationalUnitName = optional commonName = supplied uid = optional emailAddress = optional And it works - my certs now include the uid in the Subject name.
