Hi all, I'll answer myself for future reference in this list's archive. The problem was that on my irix system there was no /dev/[u]random device. After installing prngd and running RAND_egd at the appropriate place in the code, my program now works fine. The problem probably occurs when sending a nonce in the TLS protocol, hence the problem is client specific.
