OOPS, sorry, should have read the original posting more fully.
You already have the OpenSSL certificate and OpenCA cannot seem to deal with it? I guess you could do the experiment to find out if the "+" is the culprit. It may be that the inclusion of the "+" triggered a different kind of string type that OpenCA cannot process. It may be that there is a code bug in OpenCA that cannot deal with this character.
Asking the OpenCA list about it does seem like a good way to proceed.
