No disrespect. I'll try what Michael and Ger suggested. However, of
course, if somebody wants to suggest other flags I may have missed, I'd
appreciate that. Yes, we're building OpenSSL with GCC, just as the rest
of our code, and everything else is built in 64-bit on 64-bit platforms.
And I don't' think the problem is sparc-related.

I tried another 64-bit platform and had the same problem with the
program hanging in the same place in the code. I think I'm missing some
compile flag. What flags should be used to compile OpenSSL on a 64-bit
platform with GCC? I think we're using version 0.9.8, which is a few
years old.
