bug? no, this is not a bug.
native posix tar doesn't read gzip files, gzip does.
gnu tar munged gzip into tar to create a hybrid.
gunzip -c filename.tar.gz | tar xvf -
or
gunzip filename.tar.gz
tar xvf filename.tar
works just great on Solaris and any other Unix platform.
