OpenSSL has other issues as well for resource-limited systems, such as using (relatively) a lot of memory for storing per-connection data. I've had a look at a commerical library called yaSSL (http://www.yassl.com) and it seems as if it could offer some considerable advantages over OpenSSL for embedded systems.
