I generally refer to Plauger's "The Standard C Library", where he quotes the spec with commentary and implementation. Plauger was a co-author of the standard. Google finds this copy of the spec: http://flash-gordon.me.uk/ansi.c.txt Even K&R say free(NULL) is a noop.
