The *algorithm* is included by default in 0.9.8 as far back as I have, and it should work as a plain digest and for (hybrid) signatures e.g. certs. If you want the ciphersuites that use SHA256 (or SHA384) HMAC, or the new SHA2-based KDF, those only exist in TLSv1.2.
