I started working on something similar to this that decouples data-path and
control-plan for the backend devices and threw some ideas out in Cinder
channel this morning.  Luckily some folks remembered this post and pointed
me to it :)

Wondering did you ever post anything here?  Would you be interested in
collaborating on this and sharing ideas?​  I'm planning to have a prototype
ready to share later this week, but it sounds like you may already have a
lot of this done so it would be cool if we worked together on it.
