I investigated this recently. Apparently that was a feature at one time, but the Gerrit devs neutered it several years ago because it was in conflict with other features where they were relying on long-term stability of the username in places where they arguably should not have done. https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/repo-discuss/y3Kq0YiKC7Q That said, Sean I'll try to replicate this issue and dig into Gerrit's DB to figure out what's missing/screwy on your account. I think I helped merge those disjoint accounts for you a few months ago, so I probably missed something at that time.
