Hello Edgar -

Scientific WG checking in.

Blair Bethwaite and I have been co-chairs since the group’s formal inauguration
at the Austin summit.

A brief summary of where we are:

* We had about a hundred people present at the Austin session for the WG. The
summit etherpad [1] shows how the WG brings together a wide group of
institutions. The discussions were all too brief but the social connections
made have flourished.

* There is plenty of outreach to the scientific computing community, including
various events planned for the Supercomputing conference in November:
  - In large part due to Bill Boas and other WG members, there will be a panel
session on OpenStack.
  - Thanks to Jon Mills and other WG members a BOF session application is
undergoing preparation.
  - WG members from institutions with booths have also offered to host
OpenStack content at the show.
  - WG members are assisting the Foundation with a white paper on OpenStack and
HPC.

* WG members have also been very active in the HPC / Research speaker track at
the summits.

* The WG has a wiki page[2] and a page under construction listing
scientific/research OpenStack clouds.

* We meet weekly on IRC[3]. The focus of discussion tends to be on knowledge
sharing rather than co-ordination of work, and this seems to work well for our
members.

I don’t think we have specific plans for the Barcelona summit at this point -
other than that we are looking forward to participating.

Best wishes,
Stig and Blair
